Natural Stone Institute Announces 2020 Stone Industry Education Series


Oberlin, OH, January 14, 2020—The Natural Stone Institute and Stone World magazine are pleased to announce the schedule for the 2020 Stone Industry Education Series. Stone Summits will be held in nine cities across the United States.

The nine Stone Summits scheduled for 2020 will cover topics relevant to stone fabricators, including maximizing shop efficiency and profits, using metrics to measure success, understanding OSHA safety regulations, and creating a plan for finding and retaining top talent. 2020 Stone Summits will be facilitated by a team of experienced industry leaders including GK Naquin, Duane Naquin, Tony Malisani, and Eric Tryon.

Natural Stone Institute Scholarship Recipients to Be Recognized at TISE

Oberlin, OH, January 7, 2020—Three scholarship recipients will be recognized during the Natural Stone Institute Awards Ceremony at TISE on January 28. Cody Pfeiffer (Genesee Cut Stone & Marble) and Nadia Grogan (Fraserview Masonry) will be recognized as recipients of the 2019 Natural Stone Scholarship, and Jennifer Burlak (NorthWoods Granite) will be recognized as the recipient of the 2019 Women in Stone Empowerment Scholarship.

Each year, the Natural Stone Scholarship provides a trip to TISE, where the recipient will gain valuable technical and practical knowledge regarding the natural stone industry and will meet and network with leading stone professionals.

The Women in Stone Empowerment Scholarship provides a trip to one of three major industry events: TISE, Coverings, or a Natural Stone Institute study tour. The recipient is given the opportunity to shadow industry professionals within different sectors of the stone industry and explore her potential for leadership and her commitment to a career in the stone industry.

The Natural Stone Institute invites all TISE attendees to celebrate our scholarship recipients, as well as the 2019 Pinnacle and Industry Recognition Award winners, at the Awards Ceremony at TISE at 4:00pm on January 28. Three New Courses Available in Natural Stone University

Three new courses are available online in the Natural Stone University.

The Geology of Natural Stone 1: Introduction to Natural Stone (6 hours)

This course provides a geological overview of natural stone. Participants will learn the history of natural stone, geological attributes to consider when specifying stone, and how to verify stone classifications. Course materials include four webinars with geologist Karin Kirk, as well as articles about the geological makeup of ten different types of stone and the originals of natural stone colors and patterns.

Facility Safety Plan: Creating an Environment of Safety for Your Employees (5 hours)

Create an environment that promotes safety for all who enter your facility. This course covers OSHA compliance, safety training, recordkeeping, and the importance of creating a culture that promotes safe actions. Course materials include webinars on OSHA compliance, creating a safety program, silica exposure, and the ROI of safety. Additional reading materials include a company safety audit, a silica control plan, and an employee safety training syllabus.

Stone Sales 1: Basic Sales and Marketing Measures (4 hours)

Topics discussed in this course include demographic analysis, creating measurements, and using data to increase sales. Learn how to identify and record stone sales measurements, find and mobilize customers into your sales funnel, and understand current and future industry trends. Course materials include webinars on targeting customers, tracking trends, and the evolving countertop customer. Readings include several design and trend articles from the Use Natural Stone website.

Since 2016, the Natural Stone University has provided online education tools for stone industry professionals. Courses are available free of charge to current Natural Stone Institute member companies. Learn more at www.uofstone.org.
